Deafening Opera: Driftwood

Those of you expecting another relatively heavy prog release from the German band Deafening Opera may be disappointed with Driftwood. It is anything but that. The same is true for those hoping for another release of originals. The album contains eight tracks total, but several are covers of songs from previous Deafening Opera releases.

But how is the album? Not bad. There is nothing that really jumped out at me, though I found it pleasant enough listening. Even the covers: They are sufficiently different that I didn’t mind them. The opposite, actually.

If I have one complaint, it’s that the vocals of Adrian Daleore can be too reminiscent of Steven Wilson during the Hand.Cannot.Erase. period. I know a lot of people find Wilson’s vocals to be weak. I would concede that he is not the best singer technically. But his voice seems to generally fit the mood of his songs and albums. Daleore, on the other hand, often seems to struggle to find that match, though when he does, it works well. I should also note that the band is outstanding, as usual.

Driftwood won’t be a one-and-done listen for me. I will take it out from time to time, but probably not often.
