Acid King: Live at Roadburn 2011
I have a real penchant for Stoner/Doom. There’s something about obscenely distorted guitars, and the slow, repetitive, simple nature of the riffing that appeals on an almost primal level.
Acid King are a veteran band and a good example of the subgenre. Formed in 1993 and most active between the mid 90’s and 00’s, they re-established themselves after almost a decade away from the studio with the release of Middle of Nowhere Center of Everywhere in 2015.
Live At Roadburn 2011 is the band's first live album and serves as a formal record of Acid Kings performance at Roadburn Festival 2011 in Holland. The mix of Lori S’s relatively understated vocals, and the early Sabbath style bluesy, doomy swagger that are hallmarks of the bands sound are on show on this release. The track listing is strong and covers a lot of ground too. The sound quality is decent without being exceptional- in some respects it sounds like Acid King are playing live and you’re at the other end of the festival grounds… that’s what goes through my head while I’m listening anyway!
As a fan of the band, this is a decent release, although it seems somewhat odd that it’s taken a decade to see the light of day. Whilst I’d always recommend people that haven’t heard the band before start with a studio album, there is no doubt that this is a strong performance and captures Acid King arguably in their prime.
