Fetal Blood Eagle: Indoctrinate

So hailing from New Hampshire and rising out of the ashes of the now defunct Solium Fatalis, guitarists Jim Gregory (Solium Fatalis) and Ryan Beevers (Unflesh, Solium Fatalis) decided to put together something drawing on the old and new sounds of brutal death metal. After writing a few songs and liking where it was going the guys drew in friends Lenny Patterson (Necronomichrist) on Bass, and Kendall “Pariah” Divoll (Necronomichrist) on Drums, to round out the rhythm section. For the final cherry on top they brought in the maniacal vocals of Sven De Caluwé, well known for his unrelenting attack as the vocalist of Aborted. With that Fetal Blood Eagle was born and Indoctrinate is the band's first statement of brutal intent.

Between the unshakable rhythm attack and the blistering riffs coupled with the straight from the bowels of hell vocal delivery, Indoctrinate is a bludgeoning and cranium splitting affair. The performances are what you would expect from veterans of the game and everything is operating at a very high standard. The production is clean and crisp yet still necessarily and deliberately overwhelming and pummeling throughout. The intent to crack skulls is written all over this album and it’s done very well. The album is very enjoyable and fans of the brutal end of death and tech death metal will find a lot to enjoy here. My only gripe with Indoctrinate is one that I have with a lot of bands in the extreme ends of metal, that the music itself could easily come from a number of similar bands and there would be almost no way to really differentiate between them. All the similar bands can play their asses off and are all delivering great performances, just like Fetal Blood Eagle, but it doesn’t have that unique standout factor that would really set it apart from its contemporaries.

Indoctrinate, while not the most original or unique album I’ve ever heard, still however is a well crafted and excellently performed slab of brutal and unforgiving Death Metal. If you love the more brutal and savage end of the Death metal spectrum then, even though it's not breaking the mold, Indoctrinate will still be a very entertaining and fun listen.
