Cobra The Impaler: Colossal Gods
Cobra The Impaler are a new band out of Ghent, Belgium spearheaded by guitarist Tace DC formerly of grindcore legends Aborted as well as Hæster and Horses on Fire.
Their debut album Colossal Gods sees the band leaning hard into the direction of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal. Drawing on sounds reminiscent of bands like Mastodon, Baroness, at least at that band's heaviest, and even at times touches of Queens Of The Stone Age with the occasional sprinkling of death doom thrown into the mix.
The album kicks off with the title track, which builds nicely into a powerhouse with some strong chugging riffs and some very Mastodon like vocals, both in sound and melody. “Blood Eye” follows with some great catchy riffing and strong melodies again. The song gets a little meandering in the middle but overall it’s still strong. “Tempest Rising” comes out the gate with a killer riff and great melodic vocals that again draw heavily on the influences mentioned above yet it works very well and the song kicks ass. They have some very cool tempo shifts through the song and that too is a common feature throughout the Colossal Gods. On “Spirit Of Lyssa” the band continues with their formula but it doesn’t work quite as well through the verses. The chorus is fairly catchy though and even has the vibe of a kind of metal Stone Temple Pilots. “Scorched Earth” begins with a great powerful and epic feel before settling into some more cool doomy heavy riffing and strong vocal melodies. “Spawn Of The Forgotten” is a more uptempo, thrashy track, at least through the verses before returning to the stoner doomy chorus. This is one of the tracks where vocalist Manuel Remmerie employs some death and thrash growls into the delivery to great effect. The guitar solos throughout are also very reminiscent of Brent from Mastodon but they sound great and work well in the songs. “Demigods” doesn’t deviate and has some cool chanting parts that sound like an ancient Native American ritual or something. And finally the album wraps up with “Mountains” which has more cool riffing and catchy melodies all laced with the bands stamp of doomy cool.
Colossal Gods is a very strong debut album and there is a lot to like. The production is good too but perhaps a little too safe at times. However the songs are served well and overall the album delivers the power. My only criticism is that the likeness to bands like Mastodon especially are a little too close for comfort. That being said the songs are great and the album kicks ass, so if you're looking for more Mastodon style music with a Baroness and Queens of the Stone Age edge to it then this will surely please. Not super original but very strong songs, great performances and good production make for a very enjoyable album.
