Fit For An Autopsy: Oh What The Future Holds

Deathcore has always been a genre that is fairly divisive among metal fans. People seem to either love or hate the big slow and heavy breakdowns that so categorize the genre as well as the neck tattoos and in-sync stage jumping that in many cases make the movement seem somewhat comical. In the case of Fit For An Autopsy, while they do share some of these attributes, the whole is much more than the sum of its parts. Oh What The Future Holds is the New Jersey natives sixth full length release and sees the band reaching even further into their artistic bag of tricks and in spite of the negative connotations that the Deathcore label can come with have managed to put together an album of extreme music that is both interesting and dynamic. Relying on their use of technicality and diverse sounds as much or even more than the requisite breakdowns to achieve their goals.

Of course Oh What The Future Holds is as unrelenting and pulverizing as you would expect from these guys but there is also a sense of melody and atmosphere running as an undercurrent through the entire album. Behind the blistering and at times tech death style riffs as well as the slower breakdown sections the feel is underpinned with a degree of emotional impact that helps set this album apart from others in the genre, at least to my ears anyway. There are even sections of singing sprinkled around; however I wouldn't go as far as to call it clean singing exactly. More like cleans buried under the growls but it definitely works well. Of Course with the exception of “The Man That I Was Not” which is clean. The production has a professional modern metal sound, as you would expect from a Nuclear Blast artist. I’m personally not a fan of the modern loudness wars thing but it is what it is these days. Most younger fans of extreme metal don’t even notice it anyway.

Deathcore is not a genre I’m a big fan of so I’m always going into albums like this with skepticism and with an admitted bias against the genre as a whole. However I have noticed that it does seem to be evolving away from some of the tropes of the genre that I hate. Well at least some bands are evolving and I think Fit For An Autopsy are definitely one of them. Oh What The Future Holds is a very enjoyable and strong album from top to bottom. It has enough elements that make it much more than a straight Deathcore album and for that reason I think fans of other Death Metal subgenres will also find a lot to like with this one.
