Night Eyez: Night Eyez

Night Eyez is the latest project from Jason Hartman, who’s probably best known for his work with the doom/stoner rock band Vanishing Kids. With this album he’s gone pretty much out on his own, only utilising Travis Marks for recording & mastering processes.

With just 7 tracks and a running order of 30 minutes, this is a super fast trip through the many facets of Hartman`s music. One minute, trippy electronica, the next Hip Hop and then heavy industrial like metal for good measure.

`Burning Winds` twists and turns with, at times EDM influences and then heavily distorted guitar which all make for an enthralling aural experience. `Sunset` manages to, once again confound and excite in equal measure, it’s for the most part a mash up of dark dance like rhythms, overlaid with fuzzy guitar and a half spoken vocal that gives the track a unsettling, yet compelling quality. `City` kicks in with some Orb stylisations, and has a Pink Floyd like ambience to it as well... it’s no secret that the Floyd were a big influence on the likes of The Orb and KLF which are the sonic touchstones for this track. `Peregrine` has, initially a subtly to it that belies the songs darker undertones, before the guitar kicks in offering up dense layers of distortion. `Blessed`, once again is an effective mix of guitar and inventive rhythms.

`Old Voice` with its syncopated backing takes a journey through dark electronica, whilst still maintaining its footing in the world of Psychedelia, making it a particular album highlight, and the album is over all too soon with the closing `Tomorrow`, which is the most melodic track here, it’s got a rather dreamlike quality that seems at odds with what’s gone before it, but it works perfectly in the context of the whole album.

This is a most fascinating release, one that comfortably straddles different genres, and is an album I will be returning to with some regularity.
