Leirånes, Marius: Langtidsperspektiv

I became familiar with the Norwegian band Pixie Ninja in 2021 and their debut album titled Colours Out Of Space. Marius Leirånes, a member of the band, has now released his first solo album titled Langtidsperspektiv, a very personal effort for the multi-instrumentalist. The album examines the Hamlet of Langvassgrenda, and more specifically the Leiråne farm his family has ties to. For this conceptual piece, Leirånes’ has researched the Leiråne farm and the surrounding area. Each song references a specific event, or series of events, providing a detailed look into the story.

There are a total of five tracks and although they do not vary a huge amount, what the band presents is very well done. It is all very atmospheric and moody with a prodigious use of synths, keys, and electronics. Guitars are used to add texture and the playing is very good as Leirånes and guests are able to build tension with changes of pace and injecting heavier moments, and some really cool effects are at play. The transfixing guitar work and textural builds highlight the trippy “Begynnelser” and in the spacey “Amerika”, bursts of heavy thunder-like effects make for effective contrast between heavy and mellower soundscapes. Probably the most straight forward tune is the energetic “Granatsjokk” where the keyboards have a gothic vibe, almost cathedral-like, and buzzing sound effects add an element of trippiness. No doubt this is the disc’s catchiest track.

Langtidsperspektiv is well worth a listen for those who like their instrumental progressive rock on the mellower and spacey side of the spectrum.

An Apollo Records release.

Leirånes, Marius: Langtidsperspektiv

My Score:

An ambient concept album recorded at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic about a farm in Norway? Oh, yes. Electronics musician Marius Leirånes -- best known for his work in Pixie Ninja -- dug deep into his genealogy to learn about the farm that has been in his family for centuries. Then he wrote five accessible and visceral pieces of music that tell the story of that farm, its community and his family.

On his Bandcamp page, Leirånes notes that he thinks the “Nordic sound” embraces “isolation, melancholy, a certain kind of light, coldness, vast stretches of ice and rock.” This certainly is moody stuff. “Isen på Bukta (The Ice on the Bay)” musically recounts the December 1921 drowning of Peder Pedersen and his horse after breaking through the ice covering a bay near the Leirånes farm, while “1959” sonically captures a house fire that burned a home on the farm and killed eight people, including five children.

Of course, you don’t need to know any of those details to enjoy this album. Leirånes’ ability to evoke emotions and tell stories without lyrics makes this a compelling listen. As my SoT colleague Jon Neudorf writes, Leirånes makes “prodigious use of synths, keys and electronics,” with guitars and percussion adding texture and context. This might be the perfect ambient album for listeners who don’t necessarily like ambient music.
