Carpenota (Latin for “Seize the Note”) are a four-piece instrumental band loaded with chops. Guitarist Peter Rubminetti (guitars) displays a metallic edge and some fine soloing, coupled with layered keyboards(Dan Pluta) and a driving rhythm section, you won’t be putting this one on to help you sleep . There are some excellent melodies to be found, but I often feel like the song serves as a launching pad for their playing, rather than playing to serve the song. Throughout the album there are odd transitions within the songs that don’t seem to fit, and some of the keyboard sounds (which can be an issue with keyboards) are a bit cheesy. I found that when I finished the CD, I came away very impressed with the musicianship, but, there was little that I could recall of the songs. I tried additional listens but nothing seemed to sink in. That is not to say it isn’t an enjoyable listen, for the musicianship alone, these guys chalk up some points, but I came away rather empty once the CD was finished.
