Kings of Other Wings are Australian band born out of the ashes of a Black Sabbath cover band. Their debut album has been in the works since 2017 and is entitled Phoenix Rising.
There are some good riffs and moments on this release, but generally I find the album to be a little bit under-cooked. The vocals don’t grab me and some of the song ideas seem under-developed.
Recording an album is more affordable than ever before and subsequently its commonplace for bands to release albums as soon as they have some songs written; well before they have spent time honing their sound and refining their song ideas in the live setting. In my opinion a lot of bands release their first batch of recorded material as a debut album when the reality is that a demo release might be a more suitable tag.
I give this album a pass as it’s a debut release, but I find the album to be lacklustre. King of Other Wings note in their press release that they’ve managed only a single live show due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and if I’m honest it shows. Nevertheless, I’ll keep an eye out for a follow up in the years to come.
