Bargy, Shane: Turn On The Light

A blending of singer/songwriter and pop are featured on Turn On The Light. Shane Bargy appears to handle most of what you hear on the 11 tracks, but has some help from his producer Alec Lewis. Acoustic guitar is featured prominently, with some added keyboard textures and layered vocals giving this a very direct feel. Track 3 “How Do You Know” adds some heavier guitars to add some punch to the arrangement, giving this track a power pop flavor. Bargy has a pleasing voice, there are times where his delivery is almost spoken versus singing, but it works in those more somber moments. “Where The Wild Things Are” reminds me of Sufjan Stevens at his most subdued. Bargy adds in the liner notes that the album is about Family, Tragedy, and the Human Condition, and gives a little detail about each song. “Self Destruct” feels a bit out of place after the first four tracks, but does have a fairly catchy melody with a gritty guitar backing the song up, and a surf feel in the guitar solo. The disc quickly goes back to the singer/songwriter stylings with “I Still Feel You” and “I’ll Wait For You”. Bargy puts down some very nice acoustic guitar and most of the 11 songs stay in this vein with some added instrumentation. The closing “Just Hope” is a song that was written and sung by Bargy’s 8 year old daughter, and was done during the Covid pandemic, and shows the optimism of a child during difficult times. Fans of acoustic guitar and vocal music should enjoy this one.
