Tranzat: Ouh La La

Tranzat are an eclectic progressive metal band from Brest, France. Their 3rd album Ouh La La was released via Klonosphere records on the 1st of April.

The press release for the album states ‘FFO Devin Townsend’. I see this quite often; its is a line that a lot of labels wheel out when they’re pushing out a progressive metal band with a sense of humour and eclectic style that is hard to nail down. In this case though, it’s the perfect descriptor for Tranzat. Manuel Liegard’s vocals are clearly influenced by Devin, and he has some serious vocal chops to boot, laying down everything from Devin style operatic cleans to the high-pitched screams and the humorous ringleader-esque chatter that Townsend is known for. Additionally, the band lean heavily on a similar style of humour to HeavyDevy. Have a quick scan of the track listing or album cover and you’ll get a flavour of this immediately. Devin has covered a lot of ground over the course of his career from a stylistic viewpoint, and Tranzat cover plenty of ground on this release too ; eclectic is the word that comes to mind. A lot of the tracks are quite intricate with many different parts and ideas and the musicianship across the board is quality. I would suggest that whilst Devin is an obvious primary influence on the band, they are also influenced by the likes of Between the Buried and Me and Faith No More.

I find Ouh La La to be a highly entertaining and well executed album but I can’t seem to get past how much Devin Townsend influence is on the release. I find it staggering and I’ll admit, slightly concerning, that they’ve managed to imitate Devin’s vocal and compositional styles so precisely. This album is well worth a listen for this fact alone.
