Septem: Pseudonica

Italian outfit Septem describe their music as a mix of modern metal with the best of NWOBHM, citing bands such as Saxon, Iron Maiden, Nevermore and Annihilator as influences. This gives a good indication of what is to be found on this, the band’s third album-power metal in the US style that prioritises riffs and groove, but still allows plenty of room for instrumental prowess, particularly in the guitar solos. Following the short intro “Limbo”, “The Otherside” is a good opener, mid-paced with good momentum and intricate lead work. Vocalist Daniele Armanini’s slightly-accented delivery exhibits good control and power, if perhaps a bit strained in places.

The first half of this album is of a high quality; “Blood And Soul” adds some pace to the mix and incorporates some growls (courtesy of guitarist Luca Riggio) which are used sparingly and effectively. There’s a chunky groove, strong chorus and plenty of neoclassical-style guitar solos on “Man On The Bridge” whilst the 8-minute “Sa Femmina Accabadora” forms an effective centre-piece, with something of a post-2000 Maiden feel to it.

Following the powerful title track I feel there is a bit of a dip in quality; the likes of the rather corny “The Lust Within” and nondescript power ballad “Call of Love” halting momentum a bit before energetic closer “The North Star” ends the album on a decent note. Overall Pseudonica was something of a pleasant surprise; definitely a band operating under most metallers radars but if you enjoy quality modern power metal this may well be up your street.
