Rochester's psychedelic/stoner power trio King Buffalo returned in 2021 with not one, but two new releases, The Burden of Restlessness being the first to arrive. Containing seven new tracks, recorded at the Main Street Armory in Rochester, New York, this one's a barnburner from start to finish. Tracks list "Burning", "Hebetation" and "Locusts" bubble and boil with a combination of heavy riffs, pumping grooves, and spacey atmosphere, the guitar work excellent throughout and a nice use of synths in spots. Not your typical sludge laden stoner rock, King Buffalo toss plenty of psychedelia into their music, which you can hear on the dreamy, fuzz drenched "Grifter", as well as the enchanting "The Knocks". "Delayed" is another fascinating song, with some effective use of delay on the guitar, synths, and meditative drumming intoxicating to the ears. Throughout most of the songs, the band do a great job of going back and forth between searing guitar solos, big beefy riffs, and then the more psychedelic meanderings.
If you like your psych with a lot of balls, King Buffalo are a band that need to be on your immediate radar. Excellent stuff here.
