New Horizon: Gate of the Gods

New Horizon is a new Power metal band out of Sweden. They got their start back in 2020 and were founded by multi-instrumentalist Jona Tee and vocalist Erik Grönwall. Both members were formally in the band H.E.A.T. together. Their debut album Gate of the Gods was released on March 11 of this year, and it proved to be an impressive first release. The album is full of heavy riffs, powerhouse vocals, and complex songwriting.

The track listing on this album is remarkably consistent and developed for a debut. The tracks are full of energy and are continuously interesting. Some of my favorites are “We Unite”, “Cry for Freedom”, “Call of the Underground”, “The End of All”, and “Gate of the Gods”. I thought “Call of the Underground” was particularly cool. The verses and intro sound a bit like Ghost in their melody and arrangement, and the rest of the song has the same Power metal sound as the rest of the album. I thought that this was an interesting choice, and it gave the album a bit more variance to it. I also really liked the use of synths on tracks like “We Unite” and “Stardust”. I thought this added another interesting level to the band’s sound.

I think having Grönwall as the vocalist was an excellent choice. He has a wide variety of range in his voice and can hit the high notes especially well. He also pulls off multiple vocal styles well. In some of the songs, he’s a bit more aggressive sounding, with a Dio-like grit to his voice. In others, he pulls off clean and smooth vocals very well. All the instrumentation sounds great too, especially the guitars and synths. The production is also vibrant too, and it gives the band a huge sound.

Overall, I’m very impressed with this album. It took a few listens for it to fully sink in, but I think this band is on a path to success. They have proved that they are excellent musicians and songwriters, and this entire album is fantastic. If you are a fan of Power metal, then it is one to jump on immediately.
