Radiant: Written By Life
Radiant’s 2nd full length Written By Life is due for release via Massacre Records on April 22.
Radiant play a really polished style of Melodic hard rock which should have a wide appeal. I hear hints of AOR, 70’s Hard Rock, Power Metal, and traditional Heavy Metal at various times.
I’m not usually one to pay close attention to the lyrics on an album, especially on the first couple of listens, however its hard not to listen to the lyrics on this release. Each of the band members contributed particularly personal lyrics for the album that hit on key moments from their lives; thus the album’s title, Written by Life. The emotional weight in the lyrics certainly adds something to the release, and the way the lyrics cut through is aided by the stellar vocal performance form Herbie Langhans. In truth the performances are strong on every line. Carsten Stepanowicz & Flo Gottsleben are top shelf guitarists and the bass and drum parts laid down by Markus Beck & Manni Spalka are rock solid and energetic.
The album is 11 tracks long, but it is well produced and paced so the 50 minute play time seems to fly past. I feel like there are a lot of melodic hard rock bands out there that play a similar style of music to Radiant, however I’ve enjoyed this release more than I typically do. The song writing and musicianship is stronger than usual, and this elevates them above the pack.
One to check out if Melodic Hard Rock/Metal is a sub-genre that you enjoy.

Radiant: Written By Life

Charismatic, nostalgic and confident is how I would ultimately define this hard rocking record by new and upcoming rock act Radiant. The melodic metal band stated that during the recording of this album in their home country, Germany, that: “Most of the songs on the album were created together in the rehearsal room and thus, unite all of our different musical influences.” This statement is immediately apparent in the first second of the punchy first track ‘Nightshift’ which seriously pulls no punches, the heavy hits of Manni Spalka’s drums and Herbie Langhans’ soaring vocals that both evoke a sense of unstoppable confidence. The consistent riffing and soft synths really bring the listener back to the years of the NWOBHM, we’re talking Y&T, Saxon, Tygers of Pan Tang here. The first standout track for myself is ‘Real Passion Will Never Die’ which has a wholly original earworm of an opening riff whilst also letting the band really sing together with soaring anthem-like choruses with the accompaniment of some soft yet tasteful synths: this one could really be a classic Europe track in disguise. However, my one criticism with the record starts to become apparent over the next couple tracks. Although enjoyable, it becomes very poignant that the compositions of the majority of tracks are almost identical. Frequently I found myself struggling to see the difference between a handful of tracks (but still being a pleasant experience regardless). ‘Because of You’ really pulled me back into the contagious energy the group has, forming a dark and brewing intro with a painfully honest and passionate vocal melody; this being my second stand out track. Unfortunately the record falls into its aforementioned weakness, the next group of punchy songs all feel somewhat interchangeable, you could listen to one and know exactly how the others would play out. The last two tracks feel well ordered for the record as a whole, which the band have been quoted to say: “This album tells the stories of our personal and musical adventures, milestones and tragedies.”, so this was very likely a conscious effort. ‘Twice A Week’ and ‘Hang Around with Friends’ really flaunt the potential to rock of the band, making you want to hold your lighter in the air and thrash your head in unison like its nothing. The first track demonstrating a softer side through the haunting bass, mournful choir and sombre violin opening of ‘Twice A Week’, and the latter track giving the listener the valuable advice to value their inner child.
