Rigoni, Alberto: Songs For Souls

Italian composer bassist Alberto Rigoni has teamed with drummer Mark Zonder and a number of guests for Songs For Souls which is dedicated to his father who passed in 2021. Rigoni’s early career leaned more towards progressive metal, while Songs For Souls touches upon many styles.

Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater) is all over “L’Origin Du Monde�, his sound and touch are unmistakable. Jennifer Batten is amazing with her layered guitar leads in “Youth�, I was blown away. An atmospheric side to Rigoni’s music comes out in tracks like “The Miracle�, “The Battle�, and the bass led “Silence�. Along with Batten, the other guest guitarists make their presence felt with some stunning playing. The short “Peaceful Acceptance� is quite beautiful with acoustic guitar, piano and bass, a lovely melody. When Rosini decides to bring the heat, he means it. Tracks such as “Keep On Fighting� and “Souls Never Die� (which is a guitar bonanza) ramp up the intensity. There is definitely an experimental side to Rigoni, you’ll hear a lot of sound effects and variations to the music. Rosini definitely puts the music first, this is not full of over the top bass playing (although he is most capable) as one might expect from a solo outing. Plenty of stylistic variety, and excellent musicianship are on display, guitar lovers take note, you’ll find a lot to like here.
