Anvil: Impact Is Imminent

I was pretty chuffed to get the new Anvil album, Impact Is Imminent, for review. The veteran band have some great albums and I’m always keen to see what their latest work has to offer.

Unfortunately then, I find this album (their 19th overall) to be stock standard, slightly lackluster release. Don’t get me wrong, I can find enough to like in a lot of the riffs, the tight rhythm section, the lead guitar work and the overall hard rocking vibe, BUT over the course of the 14 tracks I find that the vocals and lyrics just rub me up the wrong way and leave me feeling quite jaded.

When I find myself listening to this style of hard rock/ heavy metal the whole package has got to be great to really leave a lasting impression on me- this is an issue I have with this classic style, as much as it is a critique of Impact is Imminent. There’s just so many classic albums out there that can scratch the same itch as this sort of album, that if an element of the music is not quite up to the mark then I can find myself losing interest.

I’ve tried to give the album the benefit of the doubt-I’ve given it lots of my time and put it on in a range of situations but overall, I just can’t get into it...it’s unremarkable. It probably a personal preference thing, but my issue is predominantly with the vocals and lyrics which seem half baked. I’d suggest this is an album for diehard fans of Anvil more so than all fans of hard rock/heavy metal.
