Korseld: Jordevandring MMXXII
Swedish band Korseld’s album Jordevandring MMXXII was released back in May. This is an interesting album to review, not least because the songs on Jordevandring XXMMII were composed and recorded some 10 years ago in 2012. The songs were originally released in 2014 but for the 2022 re-release a lot of the guitars and vocals have been re-recorded. The iconic Dan Swanö has mastered the album which blends the new tracks with the original recorded parts.
Stylistically the release is rooted in atmospheric old school death metal, with some flavours of both death doom and melodic death metal thrown in for good measure. I get shades of early Amorphis, early Edge of Sanity from the album. The low growled vocals on this album are strong and are probably the focal point of the release for me. The lyrics are delivered in the native Swedish language which offers a level of intrigue to the vocal performance too.
My favourite tracks on Jordevandring MMXXII are "Bombräd", "Eldstrid", "Skyttegravens mörker" & "Jordevandring". The best moments on this album are really quite great. There is a truly epic nature to some of the arrangements and performances which reminds me a little of Kanonenfieber’s 2021 highly touted release Menschenmühle. Perhaps I’m reminded of this album because both albums are delivered in their native tongues, or perhaps it’s the thematic emphasis on War that links both albums. Either way I’m reminded of the album as I listen through Jordevandring. It must be said that there are a smattering of weaker moments on the release, but overall I find it to be an enjoyable album. I can certainly see why the band feel strongly enough about this material to give it a freshen up and re-release in 2022.
