Crossing Rubicon: Perfect Storm

Looking at the list of bands that the various members of Crossing Rubicon have played with in the past, you`d be expecting that this latest adventure from Cenk Eroglu (ex-Winger, Xcarnation) and singer John Bisaha (The Babys) to be `off the scale` quality wise, but repeated listens have in all honesty left me rather non plussed really.

The two main protagonists are joined by Eroglu's young son Efe (guitars, keyboards) and special guest musicians like Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson, ex-Mr. Mister), Ray Coburn (Honeymoon Suite), and Reb Beach (Winger, Whitesnake), which has further increased my confusion as to how these musicians involved have come up with something....well, so underwhelming.

The songs featured here are, I’m led to believe from demos dating back to the 80`s and 90`s that Eroglu had amassed over the years. Its Melodic Rock of course, but suffers somewhat from a rather dated formula, and one that’s been heard a million times.

Songs such as `Reason To Die`, `100 Thousand Years` and `Get Away ` are prime examples of this, but it’s also fair to say that had this album been released some 30 odd years ago, it might have been a very different scenario indeed, but now in today’s musical climate we’re really just looking at a (very) niche market, and even the ubiquitous ballads in the form of `Never Again`, and `Too Late` can’t really save the record from mediocrity.

I`m certainly not denying the craftsmanship of the players involved, far from it indeed, it’s that the material on offer just doesn’t come up to muster in my opinion, which along with a fair number of recent Frontiers projects suffers the same fate.

Crossing Rubicon: Perfect Storm

My Score:

Well its rare for me to find the urge to write a message to a critic.. first of all its all ok ..all opinions regarding liking or disliking for whatever reason .. thats the beauty of music.
All welcome..
But you are missing the point of this album .. from day one it was planned as classic , old school Aor .. its the intention..
It was stated that the demos are from that era deliberately.. that was the motto.

and
There are a lot of bands out there already who are trying to re invent or modernize Aor and trying to keep the flame alive.. n' still this type of music is already outdated
in whatever form or production package btw.

So your critic was like " classic pizza is boring , served a million times"
or why do you think bands like Journey still trying to capture the old spirit..
even by finding the same type of singer to keep going ?
I am sorry to inform you .. a lot of fans of this kind of music is still looking out
for the classic sound and your review out of 25 reviews up until now is the only one
complaining about its outdated.

So when you wrote "had this album been released some 30 odd years ago, it might have been a very different scenario indeed, but now in today’s musical climate we’re really just looking at a (very) niche market"
you actually confirmed that what we planned was done right.

So again.. you might hate songs.. or dont like the production ..or the singer..
or the mix .. whatever.. all welcome.
but your main and only point on your review (outdated) was a bit premature.

Many Regards
