Obsidian Sea: Pathos

Here is the latest album from a band that seems to be getting better and better with each release. The band is Obsidian Sea and hail from Sofia, Bulgaria. I previously reviewed their 2019 effort titled Strangers, receiving an outstanding 4.5 stars. The latest album is titled Pathos and continues along a similar path, leaning more into psychedelic and prog rock as the band continues to refine their sound.

Metal and progressive rock come together seamlessly in the album’s first track “Lament The Death Of Wonder”. Moody and edgy guitar, fast and slow riff progressions, and an overall occult vibe and excellent lead vocals. The trippy, psychedelic guitar will fester in your head and the band’s proto-metal embellishments typify the band’s appreciation of the past, while still searching for new and exciting sounds. “The long Drowning” diverts between stoner and psychedelic rock featuring both ethereal and heavy guitar, skillfully played between soft and heavier soundscapes. Doom influences also crop up, highlighted by haze filtered riffs, and in “Sisters” a little Blue Oyster Cult is heard as the band explores old school psych and metal territory. An excellent bass line and scorching lead guitar will further heighten the senses.

Obsidian Sea injects their own identity into these tracks, adding proggy change-ups and tempos, showing their considerable imagination and talent. As such, I consider Pathos to be essential listening, a true gem to be savoured and ultimately treasured.

A Ripple Music release.
