Septicflesh: Modern Primitive

Septicflesh are a symphonic Death metal band from Athens, Greece. Their latest album Modern Primitive was released in May via Nuclear Blast.

If you’re familiar with this band you’ll be aware of the way that they fuse Death Metal with symphonic elements to create a relatively unique offering in the extreme metal scene. They’ve made a name for themselves plying this trade, and subsequently find themselves on a major label. On a personal level I struggle with the mix of styles that Septicflesh offer-I like my Death metal to be hard hitting and brutal. If I want epic or grandiose metal I’ll tend to favour progressive metal, folk metal, or power metal. When I want to listen to death metal I favour the classic albums or a more modern technical death metal release. Music taste is subjective but its hard for me to review this album without my personal preference coming into play. Septicflesh’s mix of symphonic elements with death metal just seems a little over blown for my taste, detracting from, and almost contradicting the underlying death metal aspect of the music. Perhaps I’m just jaded after seeing them live, where the scale of the orchestral backing tracks distracted me from the live performance? Negatives aside there are no doubt some quality tracks on Modern Primitive and plenty of examples where the addition of the symphonic elements enhances the music. The best of the tracks on Modern Primitive are very strong, but over a 9-track run time I find myself growing tired of the style and approach. Ultimately I’d suggest this is Septicflesh delivering more of the same, rather than trying any particularly new or ground-breaking. Die hards won’t be phased by this in the slightest, so if you’re a fan of the band you’ll find plenty to like on Modern Primitive.
