Despite numerous lineup changes over more than 20 years, Burning Point still brings the same degree of heat that fired the band to the forefront of Finnish power metal at the turn of the millennium. Arsonist of the Soul introduces a new vocalist, Luca Sturniolo, who sounds like he was born to sing this kind of music. The addition of three other new members (Jarkko Poussu on bass, Tuomas Jaatinen on drums and Matti Halonen on keyboards) breathes even more new life into the band.
This is the kind of album that reminds us why we love power metal, especially when it’s done with so much taste, muscle, melody and smarts. With a dozen songs spanning 50 minutes, band mastermind and guitarist Pete Ahonen knows how much is too much and stops just short of overkill. The standout track has to be “Persona Non Grata” -- an absolutely glorious stunner with majestic riffs, gang choruses and a heavenly guitar solo. But, really, identifying a dud track here is a tough mission.
