Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin, Paco De Lucia: Saturday Night in San Francisco
Where have you been all my life? Recorded on 12/6/90, and after lying dormant for almost 40 years, we finally have a companion to the extradinary and successful
Friday Night In San Francisco. These three masters created an album that captured the attention of the public reaching #97 on the Billboard
top 200, and #6 in their top jazz albums, and has sold over a million copies. Both were recorded at the Warfield Auditorium, and from the sound of things,
each had an equally enthusiastic audience. The audience helps add a life to an already vibrant performance, and in the liner notes Di Meola notes how
important they were to the performers. In addition, the beauty of this release is there are no repeat songs, so, you really have a completely new set of
material to enjoy. Another interesting tidbit, the original suggestion for the trio included Leo Kottke, but at some point it turned to McLaughlin.
You are listening to 3 masters, and whether performing solo or in collaboration, the performances are jaw dropping. The skill and technique on display is
second to none, and at the same time, a most enjoyable listening experience. The liner notes have a lot of information about the players practicing and working
together to make this happen, road stories if you will. Thankfully, even though the master tapes were stored in less than ideal conditions, the final
product sounds fantastic. The clarity, getting to here the precision of these players, while at the same time creating beautiful acoustic pieces. This is a
wonderful document, and enjoy playing Friday and Saturday night back to back sometime, prepare to be amazed!
