Skold: Dead God
Having shaken off his sleaze rock roots, Tim Skold released his self-titled Skold album in 1996 to no little acclaim as he took the then fledgling industrial sound and found a niche all of his own. So enamoured was a certain Marilyn Manson with what Skold had been doing that the pair found themselves collaborating on songs and soundtracks and before he knew it the second Skold album had been shelved in favour of Tim becoming Marilyn’s bassist. The rumour goes from there that only ten copies of this unreleased album’s demos existed and yet 6 of its 10 tracks wound their way onto the internet and stories circulated that fans had even stolen a copy of the full album from Skold’s tour bus and released it under a different name…
So here we are in 2022 and finally Cleopatra Records in conjunction with Skold have seen fit to give the album, now called Dead God, a full release. Unsurprisingly the album picks up pretty much from where the self-titled release left off, with a mix of industrialised approaches being wound into different attacks to offer up a selection of flavours that, while always being angry and angsty, add elements of hard rock, blues and much more. “If” is a prime example, slow, trudging intentions leading to interesting pay-offs, while “Believe” alludes more to the final Shotgun Messiah (the band Skold was in prior to going it alone) album with a hard rocking slam given a much grittier, clanking edge.
With “I Hate” much more electronic in its intentions and “The Point” being almost blatant in its Manson worship, there’s no doubting that Dead God becomes a varied yet singular experience. With hindsight it also feels more than a little dated and very of its time and yet given the respect it deserves from actually being from those industrial days, you have to suggest that it might well have taken Skold into solo-mega stardom. As it is, Dead God remains an intriguing prospect and one that really should have seen the light of day long before now.
