Albums like this one make me feel fortunate to review music for Sea of Tranquility. Gabe Treiyer, a renowned session guitarist from Argentina, has released the debut album from his eponymous band -- a prog-rock tour de force featuring cameos from a holy trinity of fellow guitarists. Steve Hackett (Genesis) turns in a stunning and simmering guitar solo on “Scars I,” a cut that wouldn't sound out of place on one of his own solo albums, while Steve Rothery (Marillion) picks up where Hackett leaves off for his solo on “Scars II.” And Jakko Jakszyk (King Crimson) plays lead on the scorchingly moody instrumental “Enter the Black Hole.”
The blend of instrumentals and tracks sung by different vocalists lends the record an Alan Parsons Project vibe, as Treiyer and his capable band deliver adventurous and melodic performances that should appeal to anybody who listens to bands released by the InsideOut label. That said, Scars (Journey Through a Lifetime) was released by Renaissance Records and is definitely worth seeking out. My only real complaint here? A mere 36 minutes just isn't long enough when the music's as enjoyable as this...
