British proggers Lifesigns release a new album every four years, and the band’s third disc, Altitude, came out in 2021. We admit we’re a bit late to the party on this one, but that’s because we’ve been so gob-smacked listening to these eight songs. They remind us of pleasant hybrid of the Alan Parsons Project, The Moody Blues and Mike + The Mechanics.
The album opens with the 15-minute title track that doesn’t quite hit the spot as expertly as shorter pieces like “Gregarious” and “Last One Home,” which boasts a jaw-dropping guitar solo from Dave Bainbridge that recalls David Gilmour’s most beautiful playing. This is majestic, melodic and mind-soothing music performed extremely well -- especially considering Altitude was recorded remotely, without the rest of the band even meeting new drummer Zoltán Csörsz.
Altitude was crowdedfunded by fans in 40 countries (including listeners in 36 U.S. states), and the band thanks every single one of them on four full small-font pages in the CD booklet. If history is any guide, we won’t hear a new full-length album from Lifesigns until 2025; hopefully, history will be wrong.
