Rochester, New York's very own King Buffalo are back with their latest full-length studio effort in less than a year, titled Regenerator, and though Acheron and The Burden of Restlessness were both terrific in 2021, this one might be their best yet. Described as a 'psychedelic/space rock/stoner' band, King Buffalo play an intoxicating, trippy, yet heavy style of music that needs to be heard to be believed. The title track kicks this one off in fine fashion, a bubbling, oozing miasma of sound that is liquid gold to the ears, the guitars sublime, the synths floating, the rhythms intoxicating, and the vocals dreamy bliss. "Mercury" drifts and soars, "Hours" crushes yet soars out to space like prime Hawkwind, and "Mammoth" is infectious, yet pummels just at the right time with some gargantuan Black Sabbath styled riffing. Check out those lovely guitar chords and spacey synths on "Avalon", the steadfast drums percolating underneath, and of course the exotic slow build that is the closer "Firmament", the lilting guitar patterns and gentle drum beats slowly quickening pace before the sledgehammer riffing comes out to play. This is crazy good stuff!
There's just no shortage of great music coming out of the King Buffalo camp these days, and Regenerator is another in a long line of stellar releases from this band. It's easily going to rank pretty high on 2022's list of favorites when it's all said and done.
