An immediate 70's vibe hits with the opening "You Turn Me On" in both instrumentation and sound. Excellent organ work kicks in to accompany Fender Rhodes piano and drums, and a bed of strings in the background. This is a slow builder, it has a whimsical feel, and almost never takes off as you might expect, rather it simmers and adds layers. "One Whisper" continues the feel, with another cool melody over the top. There is space and spaciness in these tracks, a tempered laid back edge. I like how the guitar sits in the background, but those picked notes ring nicely in the distance.
"Heavy On Karma" kicks things up adding a heavier feel than the previous tracks, and I enjoy the addition of the guitar playing along with keyboards, and gets jammy towards the end. Punchy lead guitar and stabby Rhodes chords make this one a favorite, I would like to hear more aggressive tracks. Haunting keyboards open and remain throughout the title track, which might be the spaciest feel of the entire album. Flute is brought in to add a little something different on "Babylon Everything" which to my ears is most definitely a space rock track. Voices and talking (in the background) add to the weirdness factor. "Joe" may contain my favorite melody on the album, once things get going, the guitar and keyboard both play this line at times, and it's simple and beautiful, I love it. The closing "Pharoah's Scribbled Phantasms" takes a bit to get going, but good things come to those who wait. I really wish the band had done more like this, which ups the intensity, and maintains the spacey flavor that permeates the album.
I'm not sure how to classify their music, at times it can be spacey and psychedelic, other moments touch on fusion. The entire album is full of
melodic and catchy instrumentals. Don't put this album on the shelf after a listen or two, this is a grower. I found myself really
enjoying the keyboard work which is subtle.
