Even Flow: Mediterraneo

Mediterraneo is the new EP from Italian progressive metal band Even Flow, whose actual lineup is comprised of Marco Pastorino on vocals, Luca Negro on bass, Giorgio Lunesu on drums, Pietro Lunesu on guitars and backing vocals, and guest musician Alessandro Bertoni on all keyboards.

“Ocean Lies” opens de EP with a force of its own, fierce sounding drums lead the band to deliver a great heavy opener with superb Geoff Tate sounding vocals by Pastorino and a couple of cool tempo twists that give a sneak peak of what’s to come. “Ray of Light” is the blueprint progressive metal song, Dream Theater formula written all over the place, but catchier, with outstanding guitars and keyboards, plus a super focused rhythm section…can’t go wrong! The piano-driven ballad “Leaves” lifts the light from an already optimistic and hopeful sounding EP even more, beautiful piano soloing and great vocals once again.

“Revelation Day” is the more single-sounding material here, every instrument shines without overwhelming or shadowing the others, no odd signatures here, all very well-known but also very well executed. Love the guitar solo towards the end. Last but never least the title track “Mediterraneo”, clocking over 7 minutes, it kicks off with a Mediterranean mix of sea waves and guitar licks, and the hooky melodies attack early to never leave the song. It builds through multiple layers of guitars, keys and even bass licks, like trying to further escalate a hill with no visible summit. The guitar work on this song is phenomenal, hypnotic to say the less… everything about this song is great and all band members show how talented they are, but the guitars inevitably separate from the rest of the instruments to a different level, IMHO. Even Flow has two full studio albums before this EP… guess I have some homework to do. Cheers
