It’s been a long time since I’ve heard blues-infused rock and roll that sounds this potent. From the opening guitar solo and thunderous drums on “Rebel Fire” -- a searing ode to friendship and nonconformity -- through the Southern-rocking bonus track “Lone Cowboy,” The Guitar & Whiskey Club’s self-titled debut EP is one of those albums that makes you want to press “play” again the second it ends.
The Los Angeles-based quartet began life in 2016 as a covers band, but the pandemic inspired its members to write original material and bring in new vocalist Mark Prudeaux, who sounds like he could have fronted one of those bluesy hair bands the late Eighties spawned. Although these five songs are no Eighties retreads, they do boast the kind of anthemic groove and spirit that once rocked arenas every night of the week. “I Know” is a windows-down feel-good song about love gone wrong, while “Sleazy” slams and “Does Your Dog Bite” grooves. It may be the EP’s weakest and most generic song, but it’s still a stomper.
The pandemic ruined a lot of things; fortunately, something good -- like this record -- came out of it, too.
