The Norwegian trio Dim Gray paints colorful soundscapes on its second album, Firmament, with a dense amalgam of layered vocals, guitars and keyboards. Call it post prog, chamber pop, indie folk, lush electronica or simply art rock, this is a sonic feast. While definitive hooks are hard to find and it’s often difficult to discern Oskar Holldorff’s lead vocals, it’s easy to envision this album tickling the ears of a broad audience, with equal dashes of melody and melancholy. All 12 songs clock in at less than five minutes, and comparisons to Steven Wilson, Tears For Frears, Radiohead and Sigur Rós are warranted.
