Massive Wagons: Triggered
Can it really be ten years since Massive Wagons first arrived with their riotously good fun rock? Well, so it would appear, the 2012 debut Fire It Up being followed by a further four albums between then and 2020’s House Of Noise, which even found the boys breaking into the Top 10 in the UK charts! Two years down the line and Massive Wagons are back, this time adding a real social conscience to music that can all too easily be confused for being throwaway anthems.
“Fuck The Haters” opens the account for Triggered, and while that may all sound a little, well, you know, obvious, the message of just allow everyone to get on being themselves as you do the same, really is that simple. Here’s it’s rolled up in a singalong of huge proportions and it’s massively memorable as a result. And yes, “A.S.S.H.O.L.E” hardly suggests that we’re in Booker Prize winning prose territory here but as comments on the utterly self important buffoonery and (allegedly…) criminal people who have governed the UK over the past few years, well it’s as fitting a slap of riffs, solos and pounding beats as you could hope to find. The almost waltz-like raunch n’ roll of the album’s title track suggests that this lot have been paying attention when in the company of a certain Ginger Wildheart, a sense of quirkiness neatly wrapped in a darting rock sprint of delight, whereas “Please Stay Calm” feels like an updated take on The Police’s “Every Breath You Take”, with the mature vocal from Barry ‘Baz’ Mills a joy to behold. Everywhere you turn however, Baz is excellent, but he’s matched by guitarists Adam Thistlethwaite and Stevie Holl, while bassist Adam “Bowz” Bouskill and drummer Alex Thistlethwaite are hardly slouches on their respective instruments.
It’s no exaggeration to suggest that Massive Wagons have been one of the most exciting outfits on the UK rock scene for, well, the ten years that they’ve existed. However, with Triggered it really feels like they’s made a statement that defines who they are. That it’s excellent should therefore surprise no one.
