Denouncement Pyre hails from my favorite revival city of Melbourne in my beautiful home country of Australia. With three albums and various EP’s and 7in’s under their belts the guys have begun to make their mark in the underground. Touring extensively in their home country as well as New Zealand and also making it over to the USA for Maryland Deathfest. Now they are back with their fourth installment Forever Burning.
It all kicks off with the title track “Forever Burning” which is a cool thrashy blackened death track with some familiar yet ballsy riffing and some tasty leads. Overall the track has a lot of drive and has that dripping dankness as well that goes so well with this type of music. “The Liberating Fires OF Moloch” is more blackened and gives me a strong Melechesh vibe without the middle eastern elements of course. But they have captured that band's power and aggression very well. Some cool blood curdling screams and growls by vocalist and guitarist ‘D’ as well. There’s even a moment when it almost goes Death ’n’ Roll but its only fleeting. I also like the hypnotic guitar tapping melody at the end. “Tongues Stretched for Salvation” feels a bit more contemplative, ponderous and darkly epic although only slightly. The black metal drumming onslaught has plenty to say in this track too however there are moments that the band slows down and lets the darkness breathe. I like the somewhat progressive nature of the track too. It feels like a journey into a cavern of evil incantations and demonic rites. “Darkness In The Eyes Of Apophis” returns to the blackened speed. The song has moments where it sounds huge and ominous yet thunderous and explosive simultaneously. “Hung Like Swine” continues the blackened attack with a visceral nastiness. The vocals by ‘D’ are many times throughout more reminiscent of the harsher Thrash vocalists from back in the 80’s and early 90’s. But of course he also gives a mix of death growls and black metal screams. It also needs to be said that drumming of ‘L’ is very effective and powerful. “Burn This World And Start Again” has a more simplistic opening but does build and progress almost like an early Opeth sound to the riffs and changes. It also reminds me a little of early Amorphis as well. The song feels quite different within the context of the rest of the material but it’s a welcome slight diversion from the pummeling. “The Oppressor Of Light” realigns the listener back into the blackness and extremity. It does have a slight punkishness to the opening riff but it’s seamlessly melded with the blackened death riffing that follows. “Sunder The Living Temple” has a more doomy epic slow paced feel. Again it’s a slight departure from the onslaught that dominates the rest of the album. I love the riff that kicks in about half way through the album. Yes it’s been done before a million times but it still sounds killer here too and the dissonance that follows it makes it their own and very cool.
My only real criticism is on the production end of things. The guitars could sound a little more thick at times to accentuate the heaviness of the riffing and the drums at times are a little buried. I found I needed to really play the album loud to feel its true power. But overall it’s certainly not terrible and on the whole it still sounds pretty good.
As an expat Sydney-sider I’m obligated to hate all things Melbourne (just kidding), but in this case I will make a reluctant exception. It always brings a warmth to my metal heart when I see good work come from my homeland, keeping the extreme metal scene alive and well over there. Now to be honest Forever Burning isn’t doing anything incredibly new or innovative but it doesn’t really matter because the album has some great nasty and vicious material nonetheless. Denouncement Pyre has created a well honed savage yet musical journey into the bowels of hell and it's very cool.
