Miriodor: Elements
If you look up quirky in the dictionary, a picture of Miriodir should be next to it. Their music is uniquely their own, and I’m still not sure why they connected with me. I remember buying Mekano in preparation for their 2002 Nearfest appearance, and I’ve been hooked ever since.
Fast forward to 2022, and we have Miriodir’s latest studio effort Elements. I find most artists classified under the RIO tag a bit too far off center for my taste, but not Miriodir. The opening “Boomerang“ has a keyboard tone that recalls old video games. Classic Miriodir, various parts woven together that somehow fit perfectly. There’s a bluesy feel about midway (listen for the car engine sound effect) that adds a nice surprising twist. “Tour de Main” could be the soundtrack for some twisted carnival ride. “Poulette-Bicyclette” features upfront guitar, and as you’d expect by now, a crazy arrangement that simply works. “Embuscade“ seems to build in intensity over its 8+ minutes with varied instrumentation. The closing “Conflit d’Horaires“ features punchy guitar and bass lines, and is the heaviest track on the album.
6 tracks, with 43 minutes of clever melodic chaos is the best way I can describe them. The album seems a bit laid back compared to other efforts, but very solid from start to finish. Miriodir are a band full of surprises, many twists and turns await you, and it seems every listen I get something new that did not catch my ear previously.
