Between Sixes and Sevens is the self-released 2nd studio album (EP length) by cinematic progressive rock American band Dark Beauty, and it is supposed to pertain to a trilogy about a Dark Angel, a story that began 2014 with the debut release Fall from Grace, and now that journey of the fallen angel continues as she struggles to regain her place in heaven… The band is comprised of Liz Tapia o lead vocals and storyteller, Bryan Zeigler on guitars, Katie Pachnos on keyboards and electric harp, Clive Smith on bass, Dan Granda on drums, and Warren Helms on keyboards.
Thanks to the role that has generously given to me as a reviewer to this website, I have come to embrace and sometimes even love female fronted bands, and metal and rock female vocalists in general, and have encountered a few worth keeping in sight (and ears), and Liz could easily belong to that group. Her mezzo-soprano style, warm and versatile, provide a theatrical feel to the band’s output, unfortunately sometimes it gets too operatic for me, and I helplessly feel repelled when listening to some of the music here. A highlight would be the guitar work by Bryan Zeigler, whose David Gilmour and Steven Wilson influences show themselves throughout the whole work, bringing memorable moments in songs like “Guardian Angel”, with a very tasty and melodic solo, the follow-up “Rabbit Hole” with cool harmonies and a brief metallic intervention, and “War of an Angel”, where he combines elements of pop, progressive rock and heavy metal… the longest song in the album and perhaps my favorite… if any. “Spirit of a Dead Earth” was previously released as a single back in 2016, six years prior to the release of this record, and that’s a long time… guess the whole COVID situation could have interfered in the timing?... and to be honest, even though lyrically wise it follows the story created by Tapia, musically speaking it doesn’t necessarily feel like a continuation of the previous five tracks… good song though with another good guitar work by Zeigler. Looking forward to an improved third part of the Trilogy soon. Cheers!
