Carrion Vael: Abhorrent Obsessions
Indiana's Carrion Vael released their latest album Abhorrent Obsessions via Unique Leader Records back in August.
The album is a good example of modern technical death metal, with a solid blend of brutality, technicality and melody. I get some strong flavours of The Black Dahlia Murder and perhaps a touch or the hyper speed drumming of Archspire when I play through this album. There’s no doubt the musicianship is top notch and I’d imagine this band are a force to be reckoned with in the live setting.
Allowing myself to be critical, for all of the great aspects about the album I do find it be a little ‘one paced’ or ‘one dimensional’ for my liking which means I’m more likely to enjoy the individual tracks on a playlist than to reach for the full album to play through from top to bottom. I find the break neck, all out speed to be a little fatiguing.
Personal preferences aside, Abhorrent Obsessions is a solid release which will be particularly well received by fans of modern death metal in the vein of The Black Dahlia Murder.
