Datadyr: Woolgathering
Datadyr is a jazz trio from Bergen, Norway and with their debut Woolgathering, you get a mix of up-tempo and atmospheric explorations. I’m immediately drawn in with the guitar playing on the opening “Tier” which is raw with a good kick from the rhythm section, and at 3:15 it is over too soon. The title track pulls in the reigns, laid back with nice use of acoustic bass, and spacy country-like swells from the guitar. The addition of sax by guest musician Ketil Moster adds some spice to the proceedings, and kicks the tempo up. There are plenty of variations that keep surprising me throughout this track. “FastUp” has a 50’s bebop feel, and I get the impression there is a bit of improv happening. “Datadyr” features the guitar and sax playing in unison, and has the flavor of something you would have heard in the old jazz clubs back in the day. The sax adds a lot to the band’s sound, and I would not be surprised to find them add a full-time saxophonist. “Low Hanging Moon” is mellow guitar led piece, subtle slide playing, tasteful done.
Overall there is retro feel to the music, and at times guitarist Odd Erlend Mikkelsen gives off a Hendrix vibe. I love the standup bass sound, which is featured throughout the CD. The CD clocks in at a very short 32 minutes and change which is actually refreshing. An all instrumental affair that will give a good variety and a tip of the cap to an older jazz sound.
