Black Space Riders: We Have Been Here Before

We Have Been Here Before is the new studio album by German stoner rock/space rock/progressive rock/alternative rock/indie rock band Black Space Riders (BSR), and the band is comprised of SEB on lead vocals, JE on lead vocals and guitars, SLI on guitars, MEI on bass, and C.RIP on drums and backing vocals.

An album I found shallow and too grunge-like sounding at first listen, but there were a couple of hooks that made me return, like the QOTSA sounding “Trapped in an Endless Loop”, the dreamy and melancholic “Almost (the) Lost”, “This Flow” that reminded me a lot the American indie band The National, and the goth-oriented dark tune “Beautiful”… and then I thought it just had too many songs and the lazy me did not want to keep on listening and listening, but there was this toxic and obscure vibe that somehow grabbed me and pulled me back to invest more time and additional playing… before I knew it I was liking 75%of this album a lot! The groovy Bowie-style “Fear No More” was added to the favorites list, as did the hypnotic “In Dust”, “Leaving the Hill” with its catchy lyrical content, and the epic sounding “Queen of The Light”. Yes, there might be too many songs, 15 in total if we count the instrumental one-minute opener “Crawling In”, but there’s nothing out of place, no fillers at all, and the album has a well-conceived and accomplished flow that eases the listen and helps get the mood for further listens. I hear The Mission, Sisters of Mercy, Queens of The Stone Age, David Bowie, and even some Depeche Mode, but there’s an unquestionable progressive approach to their music, which is very creative and unique sounding, crystal clear production and lots of details that enhance the listening experience when discovered. A solid record that I truly enjoy, a grower… Cheers!
