Josiah: We Lay On Cold Stone
There is something about the music of yore that is hard to put into words. The music sounded so fresh and exciting, it just had that certain something and you knew you would be blown away. We will never see those days again but, thanks to bands like the UK’s Josiah, that special sound has been reinvented and reshaped for all of us to enjoy.
Josiah formed in 2000 and in the next eight years would release three albums before calling it a day in 2008. Fast forward to 2020, when Josiah decided to reform and began working on We Lay On Cold Stone, released in June of this year on Blues Funeral Recordings.
The band’s creativity is on full display with the album opening “Rats (To The Bitter End)”. Neat sound effects and a massive drum roll forge through blues soaked guitar riffs and slashing chords. The ensuing psychedelic guitar solo screams of the hippie days of the late ‘60s. The jams emit a mind altering moodiness, sometimes chaotic and frenzied, yet accessible to those with an open mind. “Saltwater” has a great groove with riffs as rigid as stone and a psychedelic hard rock guitar solo that defines what this band is all about. Some proggy rhythmic changes showcase the band’s considerable talent. “Let The Lambs See The Knife” begins with a surreal trippiness before expressive vocals and fuzzy psych infused guitar will take you back a few decades. “Cut Them Free” is another fantastic guitar-centric track and is followed by the ten plus minute “(Realise) We Are Not Real” where chaotic fuzz drenched psychedelic guitar and wild drumming will take you on a mind bending musical journey where the unexpected awaits.
For those seeking modern day heavy psych, look no further than We Lay On Cold Stone. For me, this is one of the best releases of the year. Easily recommended.
