Robots Of The Ancient World: Mystic Goddess
For those music fans who love stoner rock, you know it is all about the riff. And with Robots Of The Ancient World you definitely get that, and so much more.
The Oregon based band released their debut album Cosmic Riders in 2019 and followed it up with an absolute stunner titled Mystic Goddess in 2021. The band inject a large amount of blues and psych into their brand of stoner rock, and include excellent lead vocals, very robust and full, and fine melodies abound. The music is both heavy and trippy, with many lighter moments where they venture into moody psychedelics. The guitar work is exceptional throughout the disc. And oh yeah, that band name and album title speak volumes of the band’s sound. And the album artwork by Robin Gnista is worth special mention.
The title track disc begins with a touch of the exotic, as the guitar riff takes on Indian tones, soon inundated with a sort of cosmic blues vibe, further enhanced with reverb and distortion, backed with a crisp rhythm section slowly propelling it forward. Mellow, psychedelic tripped out guitar, explodes into a more guttural, intense sound, the vocals taking on as much intensity as the riffs. Just a great opening track. Soaring vocals and mellow to heavy sounds make “Wasteland” another fine track. Psychedelic embellishments and burning, bluesy riffs, give this one a cosmic feel. “Agua Caliente” begins with a short droning sound, then the riffs are unleashed with a furious vengeance and the clean vocals are robust and intense. More bluesy inflections in the riffs lead into a trippy psychedelic guitar solo, all the while the riffs hit like heavy slabs of granite falling from a cliff. “Out Of The Gallows” is another riff monster, taking us back to early ‘70s classic rock. The guitar solo is in a word, awesome. That is just a taste of what this band accomplishes with Mystic Goddess, an album all fans of heavy rock should celebrate.
In what is a very crowded genre, Robots Of The Ancient World deserve to be noticed and applauded for what is a superb listen and one of the best heavy rock albums of 2021.
