Ruggero Robin Trio: Lo-Fi Project
Hey guitar enthusiasts, look no further if you want fiery guitar playing, this one delivers! Labeled an experiment in Progressive Jazz and Fusion, the liner notes state fans of Jeff Beck, Zappa, and John McLaughlin may find what they are looking for in the 2CD set. Their third release, this Italian trio consists of Ruggero Robin (guitar), Nicola Robin (drums), and Nicola Sorato (bass).
There is looseness to the compositions, as if they setup, plugged in, and let it rip. I find at times a similarity in guitar style to Wayne Krantz, but plenty of other influences blend in. There is nowhere to hide in the trio format, and this has a “live” feel running through it. There are flashes of Holdsworth, and the opening “Undicesima” has some killer slap bass. It’s as if you can feel these guys feeding off each other as the songs carry on. The subtle use of whammy bar wrapped in chorus and compression during “Dodicesima” is gorgeously done. Robin unleashes some furious runs throughout, but is also right at home grooving with his rhythm section. There is no sense going through a track by track review, let it be said that if you are dying to just sit back and enjoy some killer guitar work, then look no further. As a self-admitted guitar junkie, I enjoyed this from start to finish, and let’s just say it scratched that itch!
