Enchantment: Cold Soul Embrace
Enchantment released Cold Soul Embrace in the middle of 2022. When checking out this album I made the conscious decision not to listen to read the press release first. What struck me on the first ‘cold’ play through was a nostalgic, mid-1990’s Death Doom vibe. Coincidentally, after reading the press release I learned that Enchantment are/were a UK death/doom metal band that formed part of the scene that included the likes of Paradise Lost, Anathema, and My Dying Bride. Their debut album Dance The Marble Naked was released in 1994 and they played alongside many great death metal bands of the era including Bolt Thrower, Cancer, and Cradle Of Filth before disbanding in 1995. At the time they had essentially written all of the material for a second album but due to the break up it was never recorded. Fast forward almost 25 years and the band have reformed and finally recorded this material, co-released by Transcending Records and Cosmic Key Creations, creating the album Cold Soul Embrace.
This album gives me the same feeling as any old school Bolt Thrower, Cathedral or My Dying Bride album, but it’s a new release. It is a classic era album, seeing the light of day for the first time in 2022. This album is quality, and no doubt it had been released in the 90’s it would have a cult following like their debut. If you like slow riffs, emotive vocals in both clean and growled delivery styles, and any of the aforementioned bands noted in this review, then be sure to check this album out.
