LuBrant, Keith: Sometimes There Are No Words

Keith LuBrant makes his living producing music for Film and TV, but has a side-line as a guitar instrumentalist in the vein of Paul Gilbert, Greg Howe and Steve Vai. He calls Sometimes There Are No Words as a ‘love letter to the guitarists that helped shape my playing in to what it has become today’. There’s no doubting this as there’s plenty of nods to his influences over the 40-odd minutes of playing time, but LuBrant does I think succeed in showcasing his own style, which seems quite relaxed and fluid even on the more gritty numbers. It almost goes without saying that there is a fair bit of shredding but for the most part the melodies here are good and the rhythm section helps keep things together. Personal highlights come early, “Swagger Street” living up to it’s title, “Keef’s Boogie” has a bit of grit to it and “Army of Six” shows off a more metallic feel. “Young Again” showcases another side to LuBrant’s playing, a slower, more wistful and melancholic number, however for me the tracks following this start to blend in to one another and my interest waned. Taken as a whole though this is an enjoyable album, easily appreciated as a background listen which maybe damning with faint praise, but there is a place for such music in everyone’s life.
