Krilloan are the brainchild of Swedish musician Klas Holmgren, whose aim is to create songs in the spirit of melodic power metal bands of the late 90’s/ early 00’s, with (to quote the press release) ‘high speed, soaring guitar solos, thundering drums and no keyboard solos!’. Along with a band assembled from across the globe he is certainly true to his words with this debut e.p., which channels the likes of Hammerfall and Rhapsody on songs which gallop towards the finishing line in a cacophony of soaring guitar work, lightning-fast solo’s, fantasy-themed lyrics, massed choirs on the choruses and a singer (Alex VanTrue) who could shatter glass on the high notes. What it doesn’t really do is stand out from the crowd; everything sounds good, and the material covers the bases you would expect, but nothing really stayed in my head once the 20-odd minutes of material had raced by. Still, the blueprint of the sound is there, I think Holmgren and co just need some stronger, more distinctive material next time out.
