Danter, Ian: Rule Of Three

Ian Danter is a UK musician and broadcaster, he joined Planet Rock Radio in 2015, as a fill in for the show’s regular broadcasters. He has been involved with a number of classic rock cover bands and released his first album Prove You Wrong in 2013, followed by Second Time Around (2015) - reviewed on this site, and his latest Rule Of Three (2022).

On Rule Of Three Danter plays and sings much of the album himself (drums, bass guitar, rhythm and lead guitars, piano, keyboards, lead and backing vocals), with a select few musicians helping him out along the way, including his long time partner in music Gray Ettrick who adds choice lead guitar on two tracks and shares writing credits on seven. Other players include Glenn Quinn (lead and bass guitar, keyboards, backing vocals), Jon Sudbury (lead guitars), Sam Wood (lead guitars), Keith Laurent (lead and rhythm guitars), Greg Platt Lake (lead guitar), Chris Buck (lead guitar), and backing vocalists " Tanyth Roberts, Jane Gould, Beth Blade, and Mark Thompson Smith.

Sometimes I just want to listen to pure rock music, catchy and fun where I don’t have to over think it and that is exactly what you will find here. The disc starts with the energetic, toe tapping rocker “One Over The Eight”, followed by “Fine Time To Die”, featuring great vocals (both lead and backing), chunky riffs, and solid bass. More fun can be had with the fiery “Massive Passive Aggressive” with ripping guitar from Danter and Quinn. The catchy “Pick A Side” is more pop than rock but with another blistering guitar solo and with “Landscapes”, Danter sweetens the pot with nice acoustic guitar and a Beatles-like melody.

About the cover art. You may have recognized the long running American television gameshow Hollywood Squares, but instead of Hollywood personalities, we get musicians like Les Claypool, Eric Clapton, and Sting. Quite an intelligent analogy if you ask me.

I am really digging this album. For no nonsense rock music with great melodies and fine playing, The Rule Of Three should be well worth your time. Recommended.
