Weingarten, Carl: Stop Me Try

Carl Weingarten is an American guitarist/photographer who has been around for decades. He released his first album Submergings in 1981, and shortly after formed the synth-pop band Delay Tactics, which have released a reunion album in 2022 titled Elements of Surprise. He has been involved with a multitude of projects, many focusing on the mellower side of the musical spectrum. He began collaborating with bass player extraordinaire Michael Manring releasing escapesilence in 2016. His 2021 album Ember Days, also featured Manring, as does his 2022 release Stop Me Try.

Weingarten has decided to experiment a little more with effects and electronics this go around, playing with different keyboard sounds and programmed percussion. The first track “A Fistful of Dust” has a Middle Eastern flavoured repetitive motif and subtly explores a variety of digital sounds. It’s all very mellow, but a nice opening to the album. With “Ides of May” Weingarten adds some nice guitar solos, very understated with a relaxing flow. “Night Life Again” is my favourite piece beginning with awesome bass from Manring, leading to dual synth lines and Weingarten’s wonderful crystalline guitar. Its all very smooth and almost trippy, with that bass and electronic percussion very hypnotic and spellbinding, and the keyboards swirling across the soundscape. More fluid bass and slowly evolving guitar laying down some sweet atmospheric textures can be heard in the gently moving “For Rosa”, and in the album ending title track, Manring’s sumptuous tones and more superb lead guitar brings our journey to a close.

Stop Me Try is quite a tasty listen, especially recommended for those into artfully executed instrumental music with mellower aspirations.
