Juice Oh Yeah: Juice Oh Yeah

Juice Oh Yeah is an underground acid/psychedelic rock band from Saint Petersburg, Russia. The band has a love for heavy music and decided to make some of their own, consequently releasing their debut titled Sila Vselennoy in 2013. The band consists of the duo Boris Shulman (fretless bass, vocals) and Sviatoslav Lobanov (drums). Other instruments include Fender Rhodes, Korg ms20, guzheng, 12 string guitar, and banjo, presumably played by guest musicians Danila Danilov, Petr Muzliaev, and Alexey Uvarov. They also added drummer Alexander Markov in 2018.

The band released their self titled sophomore effort in 2020 and is my first experience with their music as I have not yet heard the debut. If you have not heard this band before you are in for one wild ride. It is quite a varied release and there are many surprising moments that will surely satisfy your eclectic palette. The band’s heavy roots are heard on the first track “Rels” where a barrage of fuzzed out distorted guitar and bass riffs are relentless. The swishes of synths and effects reminded me of something Hawkwind might come up with. The intro is much more mellow on “Dnaa”, including a cool elastic bass sound and washes of harpsichord. The melody has elements of the Orient, the drumming quite creative with its galloping runs, and the trippy psychedelic nature of the piece is highly addictive. Distorted trumpet is added to further melt your brain, as if it wasn’t melted enough already! The album opus is the twelve minute “Mane”, beginning with a lighter ambient sound, building slowly as the music takes you to the Middle East, elegantly played, further enhanced with lovely choir vocalizations, very meditative and completely absorbing. Eventually the song morphs into hazy psychedelics, focused on a brass section filtered through distortion and fuzz. It is quite a unique sound as the band has its own brand of heavy psychedelic rock. The use of droning guitar is also highly effective. The album ends with “Vnyz”, emphasizing ethereal vocals and colorful celestial sound choices that are very much otherworldly in design.

Juice Oh Yeah is a band that deserves more recognition than it no doubt receives. I suppose that’s the nature of underground music, which is a real shame as the band has much to offer. This is for music fans who appreciate blurred lines and unconventionality, where creativity is of the utmost importance.

An Addicted Label release.
