DevilsBridge: Sense Of

DevilsBridge is a melodic metal/Heavy metal band from Switzerland and Sense Of is their first full length studio album, following the release of the EP Endless back in 2020. The lineup for this new release is comprised of female vocalist Dani Nell, Vany Shade and Tom White on guitars, Steven DRT on bass, and JC Daisy on drums.

A brief intro gives way to the lyrically conceptual theme of the album, a concept that describes how everyone everywhere at any time is in search of the one sense, a sense that will be approached on each song as “Sense Of + title song”, unique indeed. The band sounds heavy, primarily led by the heavy and powerful drumming, followed by the tremendous guitar work and the perfectly fit vocals, a very balanced overall sound. It is melodic but not extremely catchy, just enough to keep the listeners attention. The vocal work by Mrs. Nell is fabulous (not sure if guitarist Shade also contributes some vocalization to the choruses and harmonies) and gives a sense of freshness on top of the furious sounding music. The bass has also its moments of greatness especially on rockers like “Space” and “Seventh Sense” where it sounds fat and dense, but Steven’s work is flawless all the way through, especially if we consider the frenetic playing of who’s behind the wheel, because JC really sounds like a machine and everyone seems to be keeping up to him, a formula that becomes obvious in some of my favorite songs like “Life”, “Instinct”, “Perfection”, “Survive”, and “Death”. The guitar riffs and licks are strong, there is no virtuosity but at the same time there’s no need for it, because the way the music has been crafted makes it sound full and round with the right little arrangements at the right moments, simple but well thought. Lost in the middle of the heaviness the ballad “Pain” floats delivering the best vocal performance by Dani, heartfelt and beautiful, not the song for me but there’s an undeniable quality to its 7 plus minutes, and the band sounds tight, a tightness within the rhythmic section that reaches its peak in the song “Time”, perhaps the only song where the band becomes more playful with the time signatures.

Slightly over 50 minutes of good and easy listening metal, an album that makes a great studio debut for this young Swiss band, with a guitar work that has really hit home with me and with enough favorite songs to give it a high ranking. Cheers.
