Subseconds: Liminal Rain

Well, this is all rather mysterious, the debut EP from Finnish project Subseconds seeming to arrive from a band and person with the same name. A facebook page exists, but only has two posts and there’s also a website with some youtube links, a contact email and some merch options. World domination would not appear to be the main intention here.

Described as a post-metalcore project, proof if it were required that I no longer, and probably never did, understand genre tags arrives with the knowledge that I hear nothing connected with metalcore here at all. However, what I do experience across the short, 4 track Liminal Rain EP is music with real heart and real soul and no little desire to make an impact. The account opens with the energetic guitar howl of “Colours And You”, which careens into view at full velocity before pulling everything back into clicking beats and some excellent clean, if impassioned, vocals. Hugely atmospheric and dark, what wasn’t expected in this mix was a saxophone solo, and yet, there it is, right at this song’s core and leaving a mark that you simply have to stand back and admire.

“Joists” continues in similar vein, a sound that hopes to almost reach up to the skies heightening the impact, even if there aren’t any true surprises to greet you this time around. Cleverly, “Lock” takes a slight breather in terms of attack, or at least in terms of how energetic the attack is, because I’d suggest that it’s just as attention grabbing through its atmosphere. Closing things out, “Thoroughfares” sits somewhere in between the force of the opening pair and subtlety of what followed. If there’s a chink in the armour, it’s that by this stage you begin to feel that the overall mood and dynamic maybe doesn’t change quite enough to keep you 100% hooked in as this EP runs its course, even if we finally get something approaching metalcore. But then maybe the masterstroke was to keep this release as the tight little 4 track offering it is. Those looking for dark, atmospheric but somehow still uplifting melancholy may well delight in what’s to be found.
