The third installment in Thelen’s Fractal Guitar series takes you on another sonic adventure. Atmospheric soundscapes envelop the listener, while Thelen and his guests take on various guitars to create to build upon the foundation of these songs. I hear something different with each listen; you can’t help being drawn in. As I mentioned in a previous Thelen review, this is not background music! Each track contains a minimum of six musicians, and once the songs worm their way into your head, it’s even more fun to try to pick out the various parts being played. This is very powerful music, which one does not often think of when using the term atmospheric, but trust me; there is plenty of guitar for lovers of the instrument. The best way I can describe the music is as a puzzle, all these various pieces that magically fit together. I do enjoy the subtle moments as it allows me to focus more on the instruments, and in turn make the heavier sections more impactful.
I promise that Thelen’s music will take you on a journey, and at the same time will keep you fully engaged. Take a chance on any of Thelen’s “Fractal” releases; they are nothing short of spectacular.
